Lahore: Another patient has succumbed to an injection reaction at Mayo Hospital, raising the death toll to two, while 17 individuals remain affected. According to media, a 36-year-old patient, Daulat Khan, who was undergoing treatment in the ICU, has passed away due to the reaction. Earlier, 18 patients reportedly suffered reactions from an injection used to treat lung infections, leading to the death of a young girl. Several patients were in critical condition, and today, another patient lost his life. Currently, 17 individuals are still affected by the reaction. Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has taken notice of the incident and has requested a report from the Secretary of Specialized Healthcare. Expressing grief and sorrow over the deaths, she extended her condolences to the bereaved families. Maryam Nawaz also ordered the best possible treatment for the affected patients, stating that she was deeply concerned about the incident and vowed strict action against those responsible for negligence. Earlier, Chief Minister Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, visited Mayo Hospital, where she met with a flood of complaints from patients and their attendants. Expressing severe displeasure, she reprimanded the hospital administration and ordered the immediate removal of the Medical Superintendent (MS). CM Maryam voiced her concerns over the dire conditions of the hospital, questioning whether those responsible feared accountability before Allah. She emphasized that hospitals should be places of hope and healing, yet the administration seemed unaware of the situation in different wards. CM also criticized the fact that the burden of mismanagement was being borne by the public rather than those responsible. During her visit, patients and their families raised serious concerns about the unavailability of basic medical supplies such as syringes and cannulas. Complaints about insects in the cardiology ward further enraged the Chief Minister. As she moved through the hospital, she stopped multiple times to listen to grievances, including a young girl’s heart-wrenching plea about her sick mother and the struggle to find medicines. This deeply affected Maryam Nawaz Sharif, prompting her to take swift action. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, she called for an emergency meeting at Mayo Hospital to discuss the issues firsthand. She ordered a thorough inquiry into hospital affairs, demanding accountability from those responsible. Immediate steps were directed to ensure full payment of outstanding dues for medicines and to guarantee 100% availability of essential drugs. Additionally, she instructed the Health Secretary to identify and take strict action against those accountable. To further address the hospital’s deteriorating condition, she sought a comprehensive renovation and maintenance plan. She assured immediate resolution of issues raised by a couple from Sindh and provided emotional support to a woman from Gujranwala seeking treatment. To ensure patient care was being prioritized, she thoroughly examined the treatment process, checked the hospital’s medicine stock, and assessed cleanliness levels in various wards. Upon hearing a mother’s appeal for her daughter suffering from kidney disease, she promptly ordered immediate arrangements for a transplant. CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s visit highlighted the urgent need for healthcare reforms and strict accountability to improve hospital conditions and provide better medical facilities for the people.
